Incoming 2015 President’s Letter

Marcy WinklerDear Members,

I am looking forward to my new role as President of the SLA New York Chapter in 2015. This will be an exciting year building upon the successes of the rich programs and committee work (such as this online publication B2E) put into place by the Chapter in 2014 and prior under the leadership of Nick Collison and our predecessors.

We already have a full 2015 calendar of social and educational events with plenty of networking opportunities.

Use SLA NY As Your Sandbox

My theme for 2015 is that Your Future is Now and I encourage you to use SLA NY to help achieve both your short-term and longer-term professional goals. Following up on Jill Strand’s call in her keynote at the SLA NY Conference & Expo 2014, I urge each chapter member to use the NY Chapter as your sandbox. Are you interested in developing your social media, management, budgeting, event planning, public relations or presentation skills? Would you like to learn what your peers in similar organizations are doing or to explore a new field? Attend a Chapter social or educational event or volunteer for a committee and SLA NY will help you to develop the skills and make the contacts you need to succeed in your professional career.

Create an Environment of Learning from Each Other

My second goal for 2015 is to create an environment where all SLA NY members are open to learning from each other. Members at every career stage bring enormous value to Chapter events and committees. At a midtown breakfast event I attended this summer, I sat across from a member who had just started her career and near others who have been information professionals for a number of years. I enjoyed the exchange of ideas among those in different career stages, as well as the chance to meet information professionals who occupy very different roles in the field than mine.

I encourage everyone to consider these goals throughout the new year and tailor them to work for you.

I welcome your thoughts and suggestions. Please feel free to reach out to me with any ideas you have at one of our Chapter events or send me an email at slanypres2015@gmail.com .

I look forward to working with and meeting you in 2015.

Regards,

Marcy
